George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, the English novelist, essayist and journalist whose Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four gave the language its vocabulary for totalitarianism. He fought in the Spanish Civil War and wrote about poverty from the inside.
