John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892–1973) was an English writer and philologist, and Merton Professor of English Language and Literature at Oxford. His scholarly work on Old and Middle English fed directly into the invented languages and deep history that underpin his fiction.

The Hobbit (1937) began as a story for his children; The Lord of the Rings, published in three volumes in 1954–55, grew out of it over more than a decade. The Silmarillion, the mythology standing behind both, was assembled from his papers by his son Christopher and published posthumously in 1977. Together they did more than any other body of work to shape modern fantasy.
